Pet insurance enrollment age limits

Every carrier has rules about how young or old a pet can be when you start a new policy. A quote at age 12 is not a promise that arthritis or an old tear will be paid. This page maps published age gates.

The short answer

  • Hard new-enrollment cap: Trupanion’s public quote form and eligibility language: pets under 14 can newly enroll; pets 14 and over cannot. Coverage already started before the 14th birthday can continue for life.
  • Product changes with age: Embrace: puppies from 6 weeks; dogs up to 14 can enroll in accident-and-illness; dogs 15+ can enroll in accident-only. Already-insured pets can continue for life (Embrace dog-insurance page and FAQ, re-checked Sep 2026).
  • No published upper age: Fetch (from 6 weeks), Pets Best (from 7 weeks), and Spot (from 8 weeks) say seniors can start a new policy. That is not a promise that arthritis, allergies, or old cruciate notes will be paid.
  • Lemonade: Public pages say enroll from about two months. Upper age is breed- and state-specific. Third-party 2026 reviews cite 10 or 14; a Lemonade city page notes a 13-year-old dog might be declined. Run the quote form, verify.

Carrier enrollment ages (public pages)

Facts below are from official public pages and our carrier map, re-checked September 2026 where noted. State and breed can still change the result.

Minimum ages (puppies and kittens)

  • Embrace: From 6 weeks (dog-insurance page).
  • Fetch: From 6 weeks (coverage page, “pets of every age”).
  • Pets Best: From 7 weeks (FAQ).
  • Spot: From 8 weeks (older-pets page).
  • Lemonade: Public pages say from about two months, verify on the quote form for your state.
  • Trupanion: Upper cap is the published gate we mapped (under 14 for new enrollment). Confirm the youngest eligible age on the quote form.

“No upper age” is not the same as full coverage

Fetch, Pets Best, and Spot publishing no upper enrollment age means the application is not automatically rejected for birthday. It does not mean problems already in the record are covered.

Premiums typically rise with age. Pets Best’s FAQ says so explicitly; Spot’s older-pets page notes the same pattern.

We do not invent senior premiums.

See senior dogs over 8 for how age 8–14 plays out in practice, and problems already in the record for what the chart usually excludes. Pets Best may also default some severe chronic cases to Accident Only at enrollment.

Age 14–15 is where products diverge

  • Trupanion: New enrollment stops at 14. Enroll before the 14th birthday if you want that product later in life.
  • Embrace:
    • Accident-and-illness through age 14 at enrollment.
    • At 15+, Embrace’s published path is accident-only ($5,000 annual limit, $100 deductible, 90% payback on Embrace’s FAQ.
    • Those parameters are not flexible).
    • Illnesses such as cancer are not what accident-only is for.
    • See accident-only vs wellness.
  • Fetch / Pets Best / Spot: Still open to a quote at these ages on their public “no upper age” language, subject to underwriting and exclusions. Verify on the quote form.
