Senior dogs over 8: age caps vs medical history
Age 8 is when many clinics start calling a dog senior. It is not, by itself, a denial. The two gates are (1) will the carrier enroll a new policy at that age, and (2) how much of the record is already excluded as pre-existing.
If the dog is 9
A 9-year-old is under Trupanion’s 14-year enrollment cap and under Embrace’s 15-year accident-and-illness cutoff. Fetch, Pets Best, and Spot publish no upper age. Lemonade’s upper age is breed- and state-specific — third-party 2026 reviews cite 10 or 14, and a Lemonade city page says a 13-year-old might be declined. Run the quote form. None of this means the dog’s arthritis, dental disease, or old ACL will be paid.

What “no upper age” actually means
- It means the application is not automatically rejected for birthday. It does not mean pre-existing conditions are covered.
- Premiums rise with age. Pets Best’s FAQ says so explicitly. Other carriers say rates are influenced by age, breed, and location. We do not publish invented senior prices.
- Embrace: dogs 15+ are limited to accident-only at enrollment ($5,000 annual limit, $100 deductible, 90% reimbursement, not flexible — Embrace FAQ).
- Trupanion: enroll before the 14th birthday; coverage can continue for life after that. New enrollment at 14+ is out.
- Pets Best: may default some severe chronic cases to Accident Only. Wellness can be added to Accident Only.
The record matters more than the age
An 8-year-old Golden with a clean record and a 12-year-old mixed breed with years of allergy notes are different insurance problems. Allergy, arthritis, dental disease, cruciate disease, and heart murmurs are common in seniors and are the conditions most likely to be carved out. Trupanion’s US FAQ example: puppy allergies that have been quiet for years are still excluded.
