High-risk breeds

Labrador Retriever insurance: eligibility first, then price

Labs are not automatically turned down. They are a large sporting breed with expensive hip, knee, ear, and later cancer bills, which is why quotes climb with age. A limp note or prior ACL in the chart matters more than the cheapest plan.

9-year-old Lab, prior hip notes

Quote: usually available at Embrace, Fetch, Pets Best, Spot, Trupanion (under Trupanion’s public under-14 enrollment framing). Lemonade: verify breed- and state-specific upper age on the form.

Prior hip dysplasia or a charted limp: that pathway is out, and Embrace’s both-sides language can take the other hip with it. Details on the pre-existing page and hip dysplasia.

Age stack: senior dogs over 8.

Breed-typical conditions (not the same as already there)

Inherited and born-with conditions are generally eligible if they have not shown signs yet. Breed predisposition alone is not pre-existing, signs, diagnosis, or treatment before the applicable wait ends are.

Lemonade’s Labrador Retriever page (updated Jun 2026) lists the common claims below with illustrative treatment-cost ranges; those are planning numbers, not what you will pay or be paid back.

Issue carriers flag for LabsIllustrative treatment range (Lemonade Lab page)What that means for a quote
Hip dysplasia$1,500–$6,000Eligible only if new after waits. Already limping / x-rayed = excluded. See hip dysplasia.
Elbow dysplasia$1,200–$3,500Same bone-and-joint / inherited rule. Signs during the wait date pre-existing.
Torn cruciate / ACL$1,200–$8,500Ligament conditions often cannot use a “cured” path; both-sides rules can exclude the other knee. See ACL / cruciate.
Ear infections / skin allergies$300–$800 / $400–$1,500Chronic or recurring notes before waits end stay excluded. Labs’ floppy ears show up often in charts.
Lymphoma / later cancer$2,000–$7,000 (lymphoma on Lemonade’s table)Covered when first appearing after waits, not when already worked up. Continuous coverage matters more than shopping late. See cancer coverage.
Bloat (GDV)$2,500–$7,500Emergency pathway on Lemonade’s Lab table. Verify how your carrier clocks illness vs accident for GDV.
Obesity-related issues$250–$800 (obesity row on Lemonade’s table)Weight notes do not auto-decline a quote, but related joint / metabolic pathways can tangle with pre-existing rules. Verify.

French bulldogs face a different risk stack (breathing problems (BOAS), IVDD). For that comparison pattern, see French bulldog cost.

Published prices we could verify

We do not invent premiums. Only Lemonade published breed-level average monthly premiums for Labrador Retrievers on a page we fetched.

Those are Lemonade’s internal averages (analysis as of October 2025), not a quote for your ZIP code, deductible, or payback %.

SourceWhat they publishedCaveat
Lemonade: Labrador RetrieverIllustrative average monthly premiums: about $45–$50 at ages 1–2, $50–$55 at 3–4, $60–$65 at 5, $70–$75 at 6, $85–$90 at 7.Lemonade averages as of Oct 2025 (page updated Jun 2026). Verify on the quote form.
Lemonade: Golden Retriever (same large-breed band)Illustrative averages slightly higher than Labs at several ages (about $50–$55 at 1–3, rising to $85–$90 at 7 on Lemonade’s Golden page).Same Oct 2025 analysis footnote. Useful as a large-breed check, not a Lab quote.
Embrace: dog insurance“Most of our Embrace dog parents pay between $20 to $70 per month” with sample mixed-breed and small-breed rows, none of those rows is a Lab.Not a Lab rate. Verify on the quote form.
Pets Best: Accident Only starting pricesAccident Only “start at just $6 per month for cats and $9 per month for dogs, regardless of your pet’s age and breed” ($7 / $10 in WA).Accident-only, not accident-and-illness. Not a Lab illness quote. Does not stand in for hip dysplasia or lymphoma.
Fetch, Spot, TrupanionNo public Labrador rate card on the pages we fetched.Unknown. Verify on the quote form.

Honest read of Lemonade’s published Lab table: premiums rise sharply by age 6–7 in Lemonade’s own averages. That is consistent with large-breed bone-and-joint and later-life risk.

It is not a ranking of carriers, and it is not your price.

bone-and-joint waits and age matter more than “cheap”

Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and cruciate live on illness / bone-and-joint clocks, not the short accident clock. Anything that starts during a wait is typically classified as already there for the life of that policy.

All waits: verify on the quote form.

  • Lemonade: Public waiting-period guide we use: 0 days accidents, 14 days illness, 30 days bone-and-joint.
  • Embrace: Typically 14 days illness; accident on the effective date; dogs often face a longer (~180-day) bone-and-joint window (sometimes reducible with a vet ortho exam), state-specific.
  • Pets Best: State-specific illness / injury waits; sample cruciate clocks can run months. Do not assume hips share that exact number, verify.
  • Fetch / Spot / Trupanion: Illness or state-specific clocks. Fetch public illness wait up to 15 days in the framing we use. Verify.
