Does pet insurance cover Lyme disease in dogs?

By Bradley Jacobs · Published Oct 23, 2026

Often yes, if the Lyme shows up after you sign up and the wait is over. The catch is a positive tick test already in your dog's records. The Lyme shot and tick medicine are a separate add-on, not the main plan.

What Lyme disease is

Lyme is a germ that dogs get from tick bites. Spot says it is most common in the Northeast and upper Midwest, but it is spreading.

Signs people notice most:

  • A sudden limp, sometimes moving from leg to leg.
  • Fever, tiredness, or not wanting to eat.
  • Swollen, sore joints.
  • In a few dogs, kidney trouble. That is the serious kind.

Spot says most dogs that catch it never get sick, and the usual treatment is about 4 weeks of antibiotic pills.

The short answer

  • New Lyme can be covered. Spot and Embrace both say an accident-and-illness plan can help with tests, antibiotics, and problems that follow, like sore joints or kidney trouble.
  • A positive test before signup is the catch. Spot says a positive Lyme test noted before the policy starts, or during the wait, may get Lyme left out.
  • Some carriers care about tick medicine. Trupanion's Canada blog says it covers Lyme when the dog was on routine flea and tick medicine and still got it.
  • The shot is not the main plan. The Lyme shot and tick medicine fall under wellness add-ons, if a carrier sells one.
  • Your plan settings still decide the check. Deductible, payback %, and yearly cap apply to every bill.

A positive test in the record

This trips up a lot of older dog parents. Many vets run a yearly blood test that checks for heartworm and tick germs at the same time.

  • Spot says a positive Lyme result means the dog was exposed at some point. It does not always mean the dog is sick.
  • Even so, a positive result in the records can make the carrier treat Lyme as pre-existing.
  • Many carriers ask for about the last 12 months of records. Trupanion looks back 18 months. Any carrier can ask for more.
  • Spot says signing up before your dog's first tick season, or before any tick illness is noted, gives the widest coverage.

A left-out Lyme does not block everything else. New, unrelated problems can still be covered. See problems already in the record.

The tick medicine rule

Some plans treat Lyme as something you could have prevented. Trupanion's Canada blog says many plans will not cover it for that reason.

  • Trupanion says it will still cover Lyme if your dog was on routine flea and tick medicine and got it anyway.
  • That page is from Trupanion Canada. Ask if the US policy in your state works the same way.
  • Keep your receipts or vet notes that show the tick medicine. That is your proof.

Spot and Embrace did not mention a tick medicine rule on the pages we read. Ask anyway, and get the answer in writing.

The Lyme shot vs treatment

These are two different buckets. Mixing them up is the most common surprise.

  • Treatment (tests, antibiotics, kidney care) is an illness. That is the main accident-and-illness plan.
  • The Lyme shot and boosters are prevention. Pets Best lists the Lyme shot in its routine care plans. Spot says its prevention add-on can help with the shot.
  • Tick medicine is prevention too. Fetch says its wellness add-on covers flea and tick prevention.

An accident-only plan usually will not pay for Lyme, since it is an illness. See accident-only vs wellness. A limp can also be joint wear. See arthritis coverage and kidney disease coverage.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • My dog had a positive Lyme test but was never sick. Is Lyme left out?
  • Do you require proof of tick medicine to pay a Lyme claim?
  • Is kidney trouble from Lyme covered if Lyme itself is covered?
  • Does your wellness add-on pay for the Lyme shot or tick medicine?
  • How many months of records will you read?

Watch the age caps too. See enrollment age limits and senior dogs over 8.
